shifting feels wrong

hi all, im new to the grand prix forum, but here goes... i have a 97 grand prix 3.8l ( k ). not the super charger. it runs great and is a good lookin car but ive noticed that sometimes it shifts funny, meaning that it will get to about 2800 rpms them shift to higher gear.then drop below 1100 rpms at wrong times. i really notice it going up hills ill try to give it throttle but doesnt want to downshift unless u put it to the floor then it kicks in that passing gear. but it should shift down without puttin gas to floor right? any feedback would be apreciated

I have a 98 SE 3800. I went on vacation last year, it was a long drive through a very mountainous region. I also noticed that going up hill, it had a tendancy to stay in a higher gear, and that quite alot of gas was needed for it to downshift on its own. I think it is normal for the car. Since it has a fairly large engine, it is probably set to downshift as soon as possible to save on gas consumption. I just resorted to manually downshifting the transmission into 3rd or 2nd when i was going up a steep hill.

I noticed this on both my GPs I've always just downshifted manually.
Another thing my 99gt does and I'm guessing is normal as well is when accelerating hard as I normally do, sometimes it will shift smooth as silk and other times theres a bit of a shutter when going between 2,3,OD.
Motor mounts, suspension and the rest of the front end seem OK?
Any of you notice that?

Re: shifting feels wrong

First thing is to do a trans filter service and see if that fixes it. It sounds like a dirty filter to me. These transmissions are shifted electronically, so dirty fluid will cause many anomalies, including hesitation during shifting, or late downshifts/upshifts. The Trac button is so you can manually turn off your traction control when you don't want it interfering with brisk acceleration.

Thanx richtazz: Trac I normally turn off, fluid and filter I've changed twice and probably do another one soon.
its almost like a front end shutter right in the middle of the shift the thing is its always done it.But then some times it doesn't.
I remember when my 95 was doing it,it was the motor mounts after I replaced those it felt like a new tranny.
Last time the fluid was change I ask the tanny guy to check it out and he said everything was OK.
He said if theres a rpm where it shifts hard just stay out of that range???

I guess he meant if it hurts when you do that don't do that.

Hey Buddy

Now your starting to sound like my tranny guy he makes me think its normal.
I'm not worried about it,it happens maybe 8 or 10% of the time most the time it shifts like a dream.
Other times its a bad dream and it can be annoying.
Weather Report?
Clear and sunny right now I can here my beers calling me.
Dogs water bowl was frozen this morning, but he likes the cold any how he the likes the taste of paper boy that came buy last night to.
How you doin? bet its still hot down there.

I wouldn't worry about it. My wife's Regal LS (108k miles) does the same thing. Whenever I drive it it feels fine, though. Just keep up with the basic service, ATF and filter. At least it's still running.

Great weather down here. Harleys and Sport Bikes are out in force as usual. Lows of 50 to high in 80s. I'm heading out in the desert myself with the MX bike this weekend. Trying out some new jetting mods.

Nice chatting. Later.
