Burnouts!

hey i hav a 2001 Silverado LS extended cab 4x4. It has a 4.8L engine and the transfer case for the 4x4 is mounted on the floor. Does anyone know if this truck has positrac?? When doing burnouts, sometimes i can get both tires to spin but most of the time its only one. Usually if i gradually apply gas i can get both of them to spin but if i floor it i only leave one strip. My friend has the same truck except with a 5.3L but he can get both tires to light up EVERY SINGLE TIME! nomatter what he does(taps it, floors it, gradually gives gas, etc.) i bought the truck used so maybe the differential is just messed up?? but if anyone knows anything about posi trac or anything that can help me get both tires to light up then please reply. Is there a cheap solution?

My '92 has an open differential and I've been able to get both tires to spin before too, but generally it's just the passenger side tire.

Re: Burnouts!

See if you can find a junkyard rearend with the G80, like one from a Z71. Mine both spin every time, even is one is off the ground.

Check in your glove compartment to see if you have RPO code G80. G*) is the code for a locking rear differential

Re: Burnouts!

Yea, getting one of a Z71 from a junk yard seems like it would be the cheapest thing. Thats what im probly gonna do. But that is a locker, not a posi......by the way, can anyone tell me WTF the difference is between the 2?

Do not do this. That would get old QUICK. Sacrificing driveability for being able to do burnouts.

Also, its a 4x4, why the heck are you doing burnouts anyway?

A true locker and posi are basically the same thing. The G80 is a Limited slip differential if I'm not mistaken. The difference is...the LSD will supposedly take power from the wheel with the least traction and give it to the wheel with the most, therefore making it possible to move. A true posi trac, or locker (like detriot for example) locks both axle shafts together much like a spool when your going straight, but then in turns they will unlock with a loud clunk and allow the rear tires to turn at different speeds making it easier to turn and reduce tire wear.

Re: Burnouts!

I've seen guys install sprayers in the Fender wells just in front of the rear tires. It's sprays a fine coat of water, bleech, or slippery lubricant on to the tire. You just spray a bit on for a couple of tire rotations and your good to go. Popular in Burnout Competitions or show cars. Basically the squirters are like your window washer sprayers just mounted in the fender...

No, the G80 is a locker http://traction.eaton.com/prod2.htm

I know I like to keep my books and lunch in there

you have seen the cars at the race track do burn outs with lots of smoke. thay use bleach to get the smoke rolling. it also eats the tires up just a bit to make them softer, for better grip off the line.

the sprayers is just a window washer unit installed under the finder wells. it will let you sit in the cab and spray a bit of water or bleach mix to get the tires to brake free and spin.
