Noise When Heat is On

Howdy,

I have a '89 Ranger, a real beater. I got a new radio installed not to long ago. Now, it worked great, until now. I was driving home with it on(not any louder then normal) and then turned the heat on, made a weird LOUD static noise out of the right side as soon as it came on, when I shut the heat off, takes a few seconds and goes away. I tried all vents/combinations, same thing.

When I got home, the music completly cut out. Opened the driver door, sound came back, with the same problem with the heat/air.

Any Help?!?!?

Check the wiring installation on your radio. Sounds like you got a bad ground. The static is probably coming from the brushes (very noisy anyway) of the heater motor being fed back on the power line into your radio.

Would the bad ground cause the radio to cut out? When I pulled out this morning, the radio cut out again and came back on its own.

Also, would the ground for the stereo be the plain black wire? Also, is it the black wire that hooks into my battery terminal on the passenger side fenderwall? Or possibly the green one with the fuse inside the wire that also goes to that terminal? I just replaced the positive wire that goes from the battery to the terminal and had to crimp that black wire into the new cable(it had a seperate spot for it already) and maybe that is the problem?

If you loose the connection, yes the radio will stop playing since you need both the negative (ground) and positive connection for power. Usually, the wire is black for ground. Not sure why you would have a fuse in the green wire which also goes to ground. Fuses are placed in the hot (positive wires). Just check your connections and I'm sure that you'll find that one is loose or if not loose it's not getting a good path back to the negative side of the battery.
