alternator pulley

Has anyone ever changed one? I have never done it before and any advice would be great! I need to know how to take it off and if a special tool is required to get it off. Thanks!

It has been my experience that the alternator pulleys are pressed onto the armature shaft. You would have to remove the alternator from the vehicle to remove the pulley.

Why would you want to replace just the pulley? Is it cracked or broken? It would be much easier to replace the alternator with a reman unit and leave the disassembly to the rebuilders.

If you are experiencing shaft play or bearing noise, you will need to replace the alternator as the bearings are inside the alternator. Again, another job for the rebuilder.

My reason for wanting to change the pulley is that its sqeaks. I have just changed the tensioner pulley and the idler pulley. Before I changed those two, I had the serpentine belt drive path realigned. While the engine was running, I could see the belt causing the pulleys (tensioner and idler) to wobble. The noise it made drove me nuts! So I changed out those pulleys and the noise is much lower, but now the alternator pulley is making noise. The alternator works fine. I didn't want to change it out if I didn't have to. I am going to shop around on ebay for a used one and keep the one I have now as a spare. Thanks
