C&D on the veryon top speed record 253mph
so i look in car and driver and see the veryon on the front page.
braking a top speed record of 253mph. what i'm doing is comparing this to the koeniggsegg and mclaren f1 (even the sledgehammer) for opinions on 1. is anyone impressed by what this car has done 2. does anyone think this is a stepping stone for top speed? me, i think its horrible, and with 1000hp it still doesnt beat the sledghammer's top speed of 254mph with 200 less hp i think its just rediculous, and with its awd i'd even bet the mclaren would beat it up to 230mph. i think its a joke

This car, like your's, is more of a grand tourer and a technilogical showcase than a full out exotic. So it is not only meant for speed and handling but also the ease of that, compared to other exotics at least.
Also it is pretty lightwieght for a car that has an AWD 7 speed sequential auto gearbox and a twin turboed 7.9l W16 which is what takes up a majority of that weight. Do you know many exotics that can actually drive through snow? ![]() Funny thing is that this Bugatti seems to have stark different reactions compared to what people thought of the vastly underated EB110. |

Bugatti/VW showed almost no concern for the weight of this car. Hennessey just got 1,000hp out of a Viper, which weighs about 1,000lbs less then the Veyron. Koenigsegg got 800hp out of a car that weighs over 1,500 lbs less. I remember reading where the McLaren engineers believed that the McLaren F1 LM's engine was capable of a good 100 more hp then they released it with (660hp up to 760hp), and that weighs almost 2,000lbs less then the Veyron. They made this car just so they could say, "hey, we made the first factory car with over 1,000hp," and in doing so, they made one of my least favorite supercars ever. You can keep the $600,000 difference, I'll take an Enzo, or better yet, a McLaren.

Re: C&D on the veryon top speed record 253mph
Actually EVO Magazine managed to get some good impressions on the handling of the car. This is mostly due to the fact that the author sat next to one of the Veyron's test driver's rather than wanting to drive it himself.
I don't remember exactly, what it said but there is a Borders right by me so I can always double check. Perhaps you can do me a favor and check it yourself. Also, of course it probably won't handle as well as as your competition, but thats because it is mostly a Grand Tourer. Not all exotics have to be full blown race cars. |

Re: C&D on the veryon top speed record 253mph
Its a sequential automatic, and guess what other car uses one, viod the auto setting, a Ferrari Enzo. Also, go cry to Lamborghini and the FIA while your at it.

Dont even call it a sequential automatic. Too many people confuse a sequential transmission with an automatic transmission when people call it that. Fact is, a sequential transmission does not use a torque converter, and is therefore much more efficient then a true automatic. Its shift times are faster then virtually anything else out there. A sequential transmission is argueably the pinnacle of modern transmission technology. All F1 cars use sequential transmissions right now, as well as many BMW (its called SMG, and I have it), and many Ferraris. It is not an automatic. Raikkonen, Alonso, and Schumacher are not running around with automatics.
The Veyron however, does not use a sequential, it uses VW/Audi's new Dual Shift Gearbox (DSG). Its a similar transmission, but uses two clutches, one that engages as the other disengages. I believe that the DSG transmission is a little heavier then a sequential, but might be a little quicker. I have yet to see shift times of the Veyron's DSG vs. BMW's new SMG III, and Ferrari's sequential on the F430 and FXX.

Re: C&D on the veryon top speed record 253mph
Thanks for clarifying and I appologize for the way I phrased it. I was just pointing out that not every performance oriented car has to have a manual transmission.
Btw, doesn't the Bentley Continental use a 6 speed DSG or is it an automatic? In fact, that the car that the Bugatti Veyron is more akin to. Not everything Italian, or partially, has to mean a virtual race car for the road. |

Re: C&D on the veryon top speed record 253mph
in many cases an auto is faster than a manmual, straight line anyways. but a manual + 1000hp=fun
not a fan of the looks though. id prefer the crystler me412.

The supercar that I'd buy is the Porsche Carrera GT. Real manual transmission.
