??? Spark Plug Gapping ???

I have a 1993 Ford Escort LX 4-Door Hb w/ the 1.9L Engine. Today, I replaced the spark plugs and spark plug wires. I bought Motorcraft plugs and Duralast wires. I gapped the plugs to .054 and put them in. Afterwords, I looked at the ones I took out. I checked the gapping and it ranged from .072-.078! The last person to do this car didn't know what they were doing. Will this cause me to have better mileage? Will there be any change? Thank you for any help you could provide.

maybe they were worn to that gap as i have seen them worn to similar specs.a correctly tuned engine will perform better. ie:better mileage,power,and emissions.

Manuel is right. The plugs have worn to that gap. That's why when a gap range is specified you should gap the plugs to the smallest gap within spec. As the gap grows due to time then it will still be in spec.
