Rebuild my 700r4

So I've decided to rebuild my own tranny. Never done it before. Never even taken one out. Gonna be doing alot of reading to prepare. Please nobody try to talk me out of it But is there any tips on rebuild kits or anything else you guys can tell me to help this whole thing go over smooth as possible? Thanks

You're going to need a few "special" tools to do the rebuild. you may be able to rent them locally..They cost about $100 each to buy.
I used the B&M Master Rebuild kit in mine and am very happy with it. You also want to get "The Beast" sun gear shell and a Corvette servo.

what kind of tools would I have to get? How long did it take you guys to do the rebuild. Im gonna be getting laid off soon so I'll have the time but a budget of only about 3 or 400 bucks. Im not really going for super performance but somthing in the middle would be nice. Drivable would be an improvment though.

Hate to say it, but $300-$400 isn't going to be enough, even for a stock rebuild.

Re: Rebuild my 700r4

U can get a basic rebuild kit for like $150 from autozone then another 250 or so for the stock converter. That basic only gets u steals and clutches and all the gaskets needed. As long nothing is broken like a sprag or the shaft, a basic kit will do. When we did my friends this summer he bought the basic kit but when we tore it down he had sent his check balls straight the the seperator plate.

Re: Rebuild my 700r4

well the thing runs. I got first and second gear but it slips when I accelerate fast and whenever I try getting up into 3rd it just revs. Other then that its just a huge loss of power. But it works. I just want a stock rebuild not trying to get fancy with it. Just want my HP back and I havent scene the freeway in years. (Seriously)

Re: Rebuild my 700r4

As a suggestion to save yourself alot of grief, find a trans shop that has a test dyno. This way you can verify normal operation and the pressure's are right before you go throught the trouble of putting it back in the car to find out the hard way. And if you did happen to miss something, I'm sure they'd point you in the right direction.

Re: Rebuild my 700r4

test dyno is a good idea. Im having trouble figuring out what rebuild kit I should get. I just want it stock. But I've seen them range from 99 to $800 and I dont want to get a cheap one but I also dont have alot of love for my car and I just want it to work like a normal car.

Re: Rebuild my 700r4

I think the B&M rebuild kit, + the shift kit runs around 200-250? I think last time I bought one was for 230. Check Summitt or Jegs out.

Re: Rebuild my 700r4

Thats the first one I looked at and only suggestions I've had from you guys is that. Im still waiting for books, video tapes, and more books to come in the mail so at the moment Im oblivious to the whole thing. But what does the kit come with. All the people I've talked to about my tranny problems say the bands are extremely worn. I have a concept of what that is. But will that kit take care of that?

Re: Rebuild my 700r4

Kit comes with all the neccessary goods to restore the clutch packs, pump and valve body of the trans. Which all and all is not that hard, just time consuming to remove and requires a keen eye for detail. You will be dealing with measurements to the .0001" and if you are off by oh so much, then you won't be going anywhere.

If I remeber correctly, the kit should come with some decent intructions. Even down to removing the #8 check ball if not already done so by GM

Re: Rebuild my 700r4

You'll definately need feeler guages, a dial indicator and something to remove the pump for starters.
