1998 Dodge Caravan

Newbie questions for the guru out there. I have the above subject 2.4L 3 speed, 4 cyclinder. Recently (3 days ago), from a complete stop (light or stop sign) when trying to accelerate it would slow to gain speed. Kinda like the engine would rev. but speed does not match. Once get over 30 mph it'll run fine or you'll have to step on the gas to get it to go into next gear. What would cause it to do that? I thought it is the "input/output" sensor but 3 speed does not have either one...but they do have the "speed sensor or Vehicle Speed Sensor VSS". Could that be the culprit?

I don't know if this is related but usually at a cold start (sit overnight), when I start the vehicle, it'll idle like it should but when I stepped on the gas pedal it'll rev. up but the engine would "slow" to rev back down to normal idle....Could the "Throttle Position Sensor" be the culprit?

Through out this events, the "check engine light" did not come on at all. Is there a way to check for codes on this particular year & model of this 3 speed caravan without having to take it in and have a scanner hooked to it?

Sorry for the long post.....Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.

Re: 1998 Dodge Caravan

The slow to rev back down is normal. At least I think it is because mine did the same thing and it didn't seem unusual to me.
The 3-speed auto is all mechanical control exept for the Lock-up of the torque converter. There are some sensors but they don't govern the shifts. It sounds like you are low on fluid. If you need to add fluid make sure you use Mopar ATF+ (3 or 4) only.

Neon....thanks for the info's. I'm just glad it is not something major or anything associate with "sensors". I search "high & low" around the engine and transmission for the input/output sensors. Didn't know why auto parts store would sell the sensors if they cannot show where it is located till later found out that the 4 speed tranny not 3 speed comes with it. As for the tranny fluid...if I get home while there is still day light left, I will check the level and add if needed. Hopefully that is it.

Thanks again!
