Exhaust Flex Pipe, 1994 Escort 1.9
Does anyone know of an aftermarket flex pipe that can be installed on the original exhaust system. The original flex pipe always rusts out and yet the rest of the exhaust is in great shape being stainless steel. I would hate to replace the system again due to the expense vs. age of car. Any help would be appreciated.

Mine has 2 of those things. The first pipe from the exhaust manifold has the cat in it and ends with a bolt on flange right near the transmission. There is then a LONG! pipe with two of these things. This pipe goes right back to the muffler. The first joint is about a foot or so past the end of the cat pipe. The second is a few feet further along. My first joint like you said rusted out.OF COURSE it broke when I could not get a replacement.I REALLY wanted to go skiing the next day..SOooo..I scrounged around here and found a piece of pipe close enough size wise that would go INSIDE the flex joint AND the other pipe.I slipped this in there and I then drilled through them and secured it with self taping screws. It is not whisper quiet..BUT it is not at all loud or really noticeable.
I wasn't sure how long this would last. When the auto stores opened..and I had time.. I priced the whole pipe.$165..from the end of the cat pipe to the muffler. Not bad I thought.I could pretty easily do this cheaper with a different pipe. The parts store here sells a variety of "flex" pipes, pipes with bendable flex sections in them, adapters,AND universal replacements of those stainless joints. That pipe..sleeve affair I put on inside the joint has been on there now for 1 1/2 yrs!.. Head over to a LARGE auto parts store..I can't imagine them not having this stuff too! Good luck |
