Love Vairs

I was 13 year old in 1962 when my neighbor pulled in the driveway with a brand new 62 maroon monza coupe. It was love at first site. When I was 16 and need a car for a summer job, I found a 63 Spyder coupe and practically slept in it all summer. My dad made me sell it when I went back to school but Corvairs were in my blood. My sophomore year in college I found a used 66 silver Corsa turbo coupe and babied that car until I graduated in 1972. With great reservations, I traded that beauty in on an almost new 71 SS Camaro (totaled by a drunk drive the following year). I could never get that Corsa out of my system though. Got married and got a job through the 70s and finally, in 1979, I found an ad for a 66 Turbo convertible in California. Wife and I drove out and I bought in on the spot. Mechanically restored, it still needed and interior and paint. Drove it all the way home to Wisconsin and over the next 25 years, restored that baby to "like new". Have kept it stock as much as possible except for radials and a spark knock detector/arrester by Blackhawk. Today's gas sucks but that gizmo has made it possible to punch the turbo without hearing 10,000 marbles in the engine. Still tons of fun to drive and I get looks and smiles every time I take it out or show it at car shows. Tropical Turquois with Artisian Turquois interior (the women seem to love the color). Additional options include electric white top, telescopic wood steering wheel, hazard flashers, AM/FM with electric rear antenna, very rare chrome luggage rack (came with the car), wire wheel covers/spinners.
Has won numerous trophys over the years but last 5 years I've just driven it on nice days. Those 65-69 Vairs still look great after all these years. In my humble opinion, the 66 is the best of the bunch and the 66 turbo convertible one of the rarest and most desirable models of them all.

That's a great story. This is my first day on this forum. I'm dreaming of not being in work and driving down the open road in a beautiful car.

Just posted a reply to another thread on here. I don't own a vair but work for a singer who did a music video where she was driving through the open road in a Corvair. I'll add a link to the video so you can see it. I help her with her IT and her website. It's a great video, the car looks absolutely awesome.

Today, I wish I was actually in that car driving out to the mountains.

Nah, that's why it's called "classic"!

You'll see what it looks like in the video link that I added to my last posting. It's just got something incredibly sleek about it.

But if you're a honda fan then - I have a civic in my drive and I'd swap that for a Vair anyday! Sorry.
