ABS Recall

Got a notice today from GM that they issued a recall for their ABS system failing in my 99 1500LS 4x4. I'm wondering if this is the notorious ABS issue where, as a workaround, people have been pulling their ABS fuse, taping the warning light, and running with standard power brakes?

Here's what the recall said:
Reason for this recall: GM has decided that a defect, which relates to MV safety, exists in certain 1999 model year Silverado vehicles located in severe corrosion areas (Northeast Pa). These vehicles may have a condition permitting corrosion to occur between the front hub/bearing assembly and the wheel speed sensor. If the brakes are applied while the vehicle is traveling at a speed of >3 but <10 mph, the corrosion may cause an unwanted ABS activation, If this condition occurred where stopping distance is limited, a crash could occur.

Re: ABS Recall

The recall is in regards to a low speed activation caused by a corrosion build up on the wheel speed sensors.
Does not have anything to do with the ABS pump running continuosly

Go here:
http://www.chevrolet.com/
There is a long menu going down the left side of the page. Near the bottom is a tab that says "My Chevy." Click it. Then click on "owner center," and follow the directions. You may have to call GM, as I did, because sometimes the site rejects VIN's, apparently. This will get you and your vehicle together in GM's system.

Any idea whether everyone with the affected year model silverados is going to get a recall notice? I don't live in a northern state, but I don't wanna take any chances, either.

Talking Re: ABS Recall

The recall is only valid in certain states which GM feels have the most corrosive climates; currently only about 8 states.

I'm hoping to get new wheel speed sensors. I purchased my car on ebay from a guy in upstate NY, and GM sent me the recall notice. They probably work with the DMV to get the mailing list for the recall notice.

Re: ABS Recall

Honestly, I dont know how Wisconsin isnt in the recall. Michigan and Illinois are...wtf?? We have tons of corrosion here. I DO have this ABS problem and have almost gotten in accidents because of it, yet my state isnt a recall state. Im pretty pissed off about this.

Which would be?

I live in Texas so I'm wondering. I have yet to get a notice in the mail. I'm wondering if this is in some way related to my ABS dummy light being on for the past few years (it comes and goes) I wonder why my Parking Break dummy light has also been on for the same amount of time. My mechanic has ran electronics and everything else and it comes up with nothing.

Re: ABS Recall

I live in indiana and we got 2 notices yesterday for our 2000 and 2002 work trucks. I really don't think that it's right to just recall certain states due to their climates. All vehicles, no matter where they are at will eventually be exposed to corrosive elements.

If the web site doesn't work, try calling chevy at 800-222-1020. Have your vin# ready. They will take your info and assign a you a case number. They told me the recall was going to be in 14 northern states. I live in NY and just got my notice today. ('01 1500LS 4X4)
