How to take ignition switch out

I have a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire. I went out to start it the other day and the key wouldn't turn. It slips in and out of the ignition just fine, it just won't turn in the run position. I was given a suggestion to try WD40. I did but no luck. I also was given the suggestion that I should try another key, which I did, and also with the WD40, but still no luck.

My husband has come to the conclusion that we need a new ignition with lock cylinder switch. Our new problem is we do not know how to take the old one out. In the manual, it says to turn the key to the run position. How can we get the old one out if we can't turn the key to that position?

Re: How to take ignition switch out

Just an idea, sometimes the ignition won't turn if the steering wheel is tight against the lock. try to turn the wheel both directions while you turn the key.
