Re: Need help identifying a car

It's a Trabant.

There were made in East Germany from the early 1960's to the early 90's. They remained in production for a short time after German unification

They were designed by the then-Communist east German government as a car for the masses; in other words, just about the only car available to the population........provided they had Communist party connections and/or were willing to wait for one for years.

The model shown is a Limosine. The station wagon version was called the Universal.

They were front wheel drive and had a 2 cyl 2-stroke engine,(about 500 cc, I thing, not sure), quite similar in appearance and function to an older snowmobile engine.

Near the end of their production run they used Volkswagen engines and transaxles.

All their car bodies were made of a plastic-like composite material.
