1g 4g63 vs 2g 4g63

I have always heard that the 1st gen eclipse has a beter motor by a large margin, but i have never found out why. Everytime i ask someone who says the 1g is better (usualy people who own 1st generation eclipses), they always say something like "because its just a better engine" but they dont know why. every one knows about the 2g crank walk but other than that, how is the 1st gen better than the 2nd?

The engines are pretty much identical in most ways. The oil squiters for the crank on the 1g are better located and larger(I think) so that's why they aren't so prone to crankwalk. The 14b turbo that comes with manual 1g's are larger than the 2g t-25. And the 1g comes with a 6 bolt flywheel rather than a 7-bolt like with the 2g. There might be a few minor differences here and there but nothing drastic.

The 6 bolt has bigger stronger rods too.

I think you mean the oil squirters for the pistons. One of the theories I read was that the 2g oil squirters were more likely to become hung open, and in doing so decrease oil pressure and flow. That would put less oil on the thrust bearing and cause it to fail faster. Tada, Crankwalk. That is just one of the theories though. You should google the subject you could read for days on it.

I wouldn't say a 6bolt is any "better" then a 7bolt. The 1g 6bolt has its advantages. The obvious reasion people say its better is becasue of this mythical CW in 2g 7bolts... 6bolts have larger rods combined with lower compression. Cylinder head has more airflow ability.. It has larger intake ports then the 2g head, though its effency is less then that of the 2g's (why peak timing is only 16-17 on 2g compared to 26-28 on 1g). Turbo TB are 60mm on the 1g (N/A 1g are 64-into-60mm) 2g's are 52mm. Intake manifolds runners are larger on the 1g to alow for that extra air.

Their are pletty of other diffrences. Trany, rearend, exhasut manny, exc.

Thrust bearing failure is not mythical. I have the pics to prove it. It is just not as common as everyone thinks, if it was there wouldn't be any of these cars left on the road.

Any engine can crankwalk. Its not just a DSM 7bolt issue. Truth is, people have ideas of how its caused but no one really knows for sure. Everyone seems to have their own theory. Im not saying its not true. Im saying its mythical becasue no one can seem to figure out why its so prone in our 7bolts.
