B16 head on D16 block...?

i'm planning on getting probably a '95 civic coupé. an i've heard the 1.6s come with a D16 engine single cam (?) as you can probably tell i know hardly anything about hondas, i know more about nissans etc..

i've read i can do a direct bolt-on using a B16 head an put it on a D16 block, to effectively make a B16. is this right ? can i put any other heads on it like a B18 instead ? or is the cylinder bore of the B18 block too big ?

basically i want a 1.6 for insurance reasons, an i've read you dont get B16s in non type-R hondas. so what can i do ? i'm looking to start with a 1.6 civic an start with n/a engine work and eventually turn it into a weekend turbo touring car sorta thing, but kinda basic compared to the real touring cars.

so can you guys help me with this ? should i try head work or just buy a whole B16 an drop it in ?

Yea, thats not going to happen.

your going to need a full change over *search swap* or start with a B equiped car.

i live in england, an i've heard that if i crash with an engine swap that i haven't told them about i could void my insurace, they wont pay out an i could go to jail for havin void insurance. driving without insurace here means instant straight to jail.

so where would i stand ? because they're both 1.6 engines, but you know a bit different.

and is it a direct swap or would it require fabricating new mounts ?

hmm. In England well then, i'm not sure.

Here they can fight you about it but worse that can happen is your out the money.

I know we also have hot rodders insure *you pay more but they cover anything rims swaps subs etc*

being its a whole differnt series of motor your still going to get brunt i'd guess. Maybe a head swap if a base model and F/I if you can't afford a B swap legally?

i might just phone around and ask what it would cost to drop a B16 into a '95. there's an insurance company that do only modified cars, so i'll see what they say about it. im hopin it'll be work i can do at home, since i'm gonna be spending the rest of my life around cars.

No they won't bolt up at all.

Look into the price of the swap I would HIGHLY reccomend stepping up though to a b18c or even an b18b with b16 tranny. B16s always leave you wanting for more.

hmm......insurance here is waaay more expensive than amaerica though, 1.6 to 1.8 is a big step in price.

for example:

to insure my sister as a new driver in my dads golf V5 2.3L n/a it would cost £7,000~£14,000 per year.
he paid £18,000~$36,000 for that car new.
to insure her in it for one year would cost a third of the price of the car.

that's why i chose a B16, i would prefer either an H22 (sleeved) or a K20A preferably but the insureance cost would easily top the total cost of the car.

Oh they have a total differnt way of doing it.

We do still have a tag for bigger motors sometimes but alot is based on wrecks theft etc. Hondas are a bugger to insure my truck 4L I6 is 500 year while my honda is over 1500. both base coverage.

I went from 1.5 to for now 1.8 if mine isn't sold it'll be a 2.1L next spring.

I would reccomend just calling around and asking it might be you modded so you get flat rate of XXX be it a b16 or big block 454 kinda deal.

you dont suppose you could estimate the costs involved with gettin 200-250hp from a B16 (if its possible) maybe from n/a or forced induction ? i mean i would do most of the work myself, mounting engine building but dyno stuff would be carried out elsewhere as would timing. but any idea on the price region for this. i've heard you can pick up a reasonable B16 for around £600~$1200

200 WHP with F/I is a breaze.

200 whp n/a on a b16 now were getting tricky.

easy link for making your own kit most any reasonalbe tune and propper sized turbine will net you 200-250 stock guts.

That uses USD exchange rate sits at what 1.98 to 1 now? Costs on swap would depend on your area you'd do better asking some locals or atleast others in the England they could give you better pricing #s then I.

wow, thanks for the link. i'm thinking of gettin into hands-on work, buying the parts an welding it together, but i'd need to buy second-hand bits cos i dont have the money for nice new parts. i want to try making my own intake manifold to reduce pipe length, and using just the intercooler core and making my own end collectors. don't worry i do a whole load of design work (old fashiod, with pencil & paper) so im no noob the designing to fit.
