98 Starting problem

It started last Nov. The engine would not turn over on the first turn of the key, would try it 5-6 more times bang the engine starts up. Would start up fine the next 8 or so times no problem, then problem would repeat. Figured the starter had some corrosion on it or a wire was loose. Sure enough, brought it into the shop and as suspected the Starter was corroded it was replaced, new battery also.
It started doing it again about a week ago, and I figured that the starter was at it again and brought it into the shop. They check the battery, starter, the pass key(s) and figure it is most likely the ignition switch. They replace the ignition switch. Works fine the rest of that day (6-8 starts) and next day again no start, and after trying to turn it over about 5-6 times it started. Problem back. They are out of ideas and want a couple of days to try and figure it out. Any ideas? or suggestions would be apprecated. Thanks

Nope. Happened again about 2 months later. Still no reason to be found.

Re: 98 Starting problem

Yeah, one MORE common problem with these cars.

My sons car has the same problem. I recall a thread on this board where someone had this same issue and had it fixed by having the fuse box rewired. I just tried to search for that thread and couldn't find it. I don't really have time to do an extensive search right now, but if you could find the link and post it that would be helpful for the rest of it.

If not, I'll try to do a better search over the weekend.

Re: 98 Starting problem

My daughter has a 2000 MC with the same problems. Sometimes car starts right up, ALOT of times doesnt. Then anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours later it starts up. Mechanic has replaced ignition module and ignition switch. Diagnostic machines don't show any problems. We're at our wits end.

Re: 98 Starting problem

I have read so many posts and know this to be a very common problem for montes from various model years. Just thought I'd add that I haven't read a single post from anyone with a 98 Z34 with this problem. I own one and have had the usual problems: blinker switch, intake manifold gasket, service engine light coming back all the time. Still, no problems starting or problems with engine idling. I'm interested in hearing from other 98 Z34 owners and their problems.
