alclad paints

Hi
has anyone here in the uk used models in motion? am thinking of ordering most of the alclad range including the primer and gloss black base coat from them.. seems a good price and free postage with orders over £50
I like the way these paints also dry fast.. would be using them for all the engine parts of my 1/12th scale F1 cars.. have removed all the chrome from the spoilers etc on the ferrari kits... so i thought the primer then the black base with the HPA to follow...
bought some chep kits to practice on etc... any thoughts most welcome

I've used them before. They are nothing special, got an order for me with Alclad II paints totally wrong, and did nothing to help correct it..!!

Not so keen on using them now..!! Just got some alclad II from grandprixmodels.co.uk. Cheap postage, but if the item is not in stock, prepare for a VERY long wait.. Worst back order system I've ever seen..

Just wish models for sale in Northants sold Alclad II paints..

I wouldn't bother with the Alclad black base coat.
I bought some and it takes forever to dry. I dumped it and now use Tamiya black enamel which drys really fast with little or no orange peel.

Nothing wrong with the Alclad black enamel except for the drying time. However, it does flow out nicely and if you wait 24 hours like the instructions says to do it does dry to a hard shine.

I've tended to use Halfords Semi Gloss auto paint for my black base with Alclad, and for HPA I use Tamiya TS gloss black, and for Chrome either Tamiya Enamel or the black base from Alclad.

Works just fine.

ok thanks for your replies..
might give the tamiya enamel a go .. i thought enamels take a long time to dry? oh well been out of modelling a while now..lots to practice...will get different paints try them all see what works for me..

I use automotive (Glasurit) matt black, then same mark lacquer as base, without problem. Here is a result:

Personally never had a problem with Models In Motion - get all my Tamiya sprays there plus sometimes kits and some R/C spares. Very quick delivery too.

Automotive black matt, satin and gloss are superb for Alclad. I use auto paints a lot. Halfords sell three for two. Get 2 cans of grey primer, and get a free can of satin black.. Perfect for all but the high shine Alclad II paints.

As for models in motion, they were OK when they had free delivery at £15. But now at £50.. Also they did mess up an order for me once, and were very un-helpful. Alclad II is one of those products you could build models without, but once you use it, you just can't go back to anything other. Problem is, just about nowhere in the UK other then mail order sell it.

And enamels take yonks to dry. I've used Tamiya enamals, more just recently and even after two weeks the paint is still soft.. But they are good, and give a good finish, but just don't touch them for around a month with any sort of pressure.

Oh - Alclad II goes VERY funny if you apply grey primer, then satin black and then Alclad II within 3 hours. I applied grey, waited an hour, applied black waited another hour then applied Alclad II. The top coat went milky in colour as it dried faster then the grey primer and reacted badly..!! Be warned.. Allow 24 hours for the base coat to dry first.. I tried to cut the times down, and paid for it...

I agree with most people.

Alclad II is very good paints, but buying the Black base coat is useless and too expensive. Use any Enamel Black paint that cost 3 time less and you will get the same result.

won't bother with the black alclad base....why does it have to be an enamel for the chrome? and not say TS14? or X1 airbrushed..
