1996 Rodeo 3.2 loud knock at low rpm

Hi all, I have been reading a wealth of info here but can't quite find the specific problem I'm having. Mine is a '96 3.2Lwith 179,000 miles. It has started making a loud knocking/ticking sound at rpms BELOW 2000. Once it reaches around 2000 rpm, it's as quiet as it ever was. I see the timing belt tensioner issues, valve lash issue, but both appear to be at all rpms. Any got any ideas what's up with this thing?

A worn out timing belt will allow the timing belt to slap on the cover at low RPMs but will quiet down as RPMs increase.

That sounds much better than what I was thinking. But when it's the timing belt slapping that makes the noise, can it sounds like a nasty metal to metal internal problem?

I've heard when the tensioner goes out it will sound like a rod knocking. MANY mechanics have incorrectly diagnosed a bad tensioner as a failed rod.

That's pretty much what it sounds like. Thanks for the input!

That can't be the original belt and tensioner, can it?

I really don't know if it's original or not. I would guess the tensioner might be, but I doubt the belt is. I'll see how she looks after a closer investigation.
This rig just arrived in my driveway by way of a trade for another vehicle I had, so now it's time to tear her down and see what it looks like in there.
