Water pump working?

How can you tell if your water pump is circulating coolant?

Re: Water pump working?

if its not circulating the pulley will lock up and the serpentine belt will break

Coolant circulation

The water pump pulley is spinning like it should be, but from what I've read, it is not uncommon for contour water pump impellar's to break. Does that mean the pulley could still turn and the impellar just sit there, not circulating any coolant? If I leave the coolant reservoir cap off start the car, let the car warm up, and I don't see any circulating/bubbling in the reservoir, does that mean the water pump is not circulating coolant?

Re: Water pump working?

My V-6 Contour failed a water pump impellar and it was very difficult to diagnois. The belt will still turn the pully but no coolant is moving. You won't see any movement in the bottle until the car starts to overheat and the bottle fills with the expanding coolant and spits it out. I found a aftermarket pump with a metal impeller instead of the plastic.

Good luck,

I just did a water pump replacement. The shaft turned nicely, but the impellor was cracked around the shaft and spun independently of the shaft. While I was driving it started as no heat to the pax compartment and then overheating in less than 2 minutes. If you do the repair yourself, do not disconnect any hoses, just take off the front casing that holds the impelleor, this is how the replacement comes. This will save you your knuckle skin and about 1 to 2 hours of your time!

Its on the main page of contour.org, but the page is currently down like I said. I would imagine it would be back up pretty soon. Hopefully today.

And he meant impellar. Impellar are the blades that move the coolant.

Probably a $100. Im sure theyll charge you an hour and half labor. No reason why you cant do it yourself though. Its pretty straight forward.
