valve cover breather

I always see these things, but I never knew what there real purpose is. is there anyone here that knows what the point of putting one of these on is. does it have performance attributes or just for a look. I want to know what the hell they do.

I've used them on stock cars only, only on the driver side though. I had one on the passenger side once and wound up having oil slung up through it.

For the street, they will add crankcase ventilation. For normal driving with a stock motor they aren't necessary.
