adding to 99 grand am

So I turned 16 over the summer and bought a pretty nice 1999 grand am gt. Its basicly all stock so far. It came with an upgraded exaust when I got it, and I got performance tires also. Could you guys offer some suggestions to what I should put on it. I would prefer to have the power at low speeds so I can burn up those tires. I was thinking maybe a cold air intake, or possibly a turbocharger?

Well performance is awesome in the newer GA's but if you really want to add some boost to it you should contact ATI Prochargers. They make an awesome belt driven unit that is hard to beat.

I looked into those and they are way out of my price range. The ones I found were several thousand dollars.

Re: adding to 99 grand am

i wouldnt spend to much on HP upgrades, like turbos, SC's. Much over 200hp and the transmission will crap out. I hav a little over 200hp, and my transmissons been giving me trouble every since.

A transmission cooler put on 'Before' these upgrades might prevent the early death of ur trany.
It is really expensive to fix a transmision if you hav no way to remove it ur self. And even more to beef it up.

Where would one go to buy a new trans, or even a better trans that would work on a GASE 3.4L ?

A trans cooler is sounding better and better as I make up this future list. I just want to take care of problems ahead of time before anything major.

well you could look in the "for sale" forums here at AF since ur already here. But you can also look/call around to your local auto parts store and see what they say for your area. You can also call transmision repare shops, or a GM shop at ur loco dealer. They run about $1500-2000(new) depending on where you purchase them. I dont work on automatics my self, but their are two different trans for the 3.4. But it still would require new high performance clutches and some other things upgraded. Your talking BIG money for the laber and parts though.

I bought my trans kooler at advanced auto, its rated for up to 9000 lbs vehicle . I also bought a fittings adapter kit so I didnt hav to cut the original lines. these newr trans lines are high pressure hoses, like power steering hoses, and arent cheap.
Since ur thinking ahead , i would save up for lower intake gaskets and maybe some hub bearing units. they tend to wear quick when hot doggin, with some high revs.

Re: adding to 99 grand am

i've wassted alot of money on my GA. When I started doing the mods there wasnt hardly any places to get hop-ups(mods), but now I see stuff all over the place. So when I did see something I liked I just bought it. Hell, I hav new parts laying around I never used on this GA. I bought bear brakes with dual pistons, for an 01 GA I had for a while, put the front on, and forgot the fact. rims wouldnt fit, so i blew over 2k on those. I could send them back, but I may put them on my 99 someday and get some 18" rims, they wont go to waste thats for sure!
The 01 I had for awhile was white with the 3.4 4dr. I liked the stereo thats about it( had a CD and cassette ). I sold it for a quick sale.

But now I am accually looking for a 96-98 GA GT, hard to find one in good mechanical condition. I hav a 3.3l engine with a beefed up trany that would worrrrrk greaaat!
