buying an eclipse?

Hey, what is everyones opinion on an eclipse?

1.If maintained decently, how many miles can i expect to get on one (ie. most say firebirds can get 200k)?

2.I posted this thread on another forum and mostly everyone agreed to go awd+turbo or not go eclipse, what is your take on this?

3.How much would a awd+turbo cost, ie. a range? also, gsx = awd + turbo right? gst = fwd + turbo?

4.How does it compare to camaro, in terms of performance and insurance.

Re: buying an eclipse?

If you are to buy an eclipse, definitly go with a turbo. My next car will definitly be an eclipse turbo.

About the AWD, I think that would be a plus but NOT absolutely necessary. It all depends on your price range and how much you can afford:
FWD turbo (GST): $4-6000
AWD turbo (GSX): $6-8000
The AWD are pretty rare so they are a bit more expensive. But all in all a turbo would be the first thing to look for!!

OHH YEAH. Dont get an auto. There is just no point! You will regret it.!!!!

If you had a slightly modded (GSX/GST) and you versed a V8 camaro, and you know to drive...I would put my money on you!
As for insurance It would (eclipse) would probably be cheaper (smaller engine) !!

Re: buying an eclipse?

whoops the auto was a typo, was meant to say awd. About the insurance, sounds good. What are the benefits of awd? pure speed, how much faster would it be?

also, awd $6-8g you think? on autotrader i could only find one in that price range (well i didnt search for higher), then its cause you said theyre rare?

Still need an answer for #1, and are eclipses hard to maintain?

ps. yea i know auto isnt the way to go. manual is faster when used correctly, better mpg and overall funnier/cooler am i correct?

Oh also, when i do get one, what are the most important upgrades i should be aiming for? A few for reliability, and a few for speed (vs the camaro like you said).

Benefit of auto: the launch. Rev to 4500, dump the clutch, and you go flying.

Price range: depends on what condition you want it in, ie. miles, mods done already, overall condition of car.

Reliability: just as reliable as any other car as long as you do regular upkeep and don't beat the hell out of it every single day.

Re: buying an eclipse?

I'd say about $8000. I would get a 1g if I were you. I like how they look, and you can get a good 1g for like $2000. AWD could launch the hell out of a FWD, but FWD is faster on the highway. Heres my thinking, if your not racing off a light, theres no sense in racing. Definately get a turbo manual though, the AWD or FWD is your call.

2g

go with an awd if you can find one at a reasonable price. I look at a few awd in cali, but they want 2k above the book value on them. Gs-t, fwd, arent that slower depending on the driver and i've heard its only a .5 sec difference between a gsx and a gs-t depending on the driver. DOn't go 1g, i personaly hate the looks of a 1g and its easier to find After market modifications for a 2g. Just check up on the miles and the title and as long as you keep up to date of tune ups and stuff you should be ok. I bought my 2g gs-t for 7k out the door with 80k miles straight stock and i am very, very pleased.

Re: buying an eclipse?

Also, you may want to look into Eagle Talons. Its pretty much the same thing as the Eclipse with a few differences in appearance. (ie. the firebirds and camaros) The reason I say this is because the Talons are considerably cheaper than Eclipses. When you buy an Eclipse for like 6000+ you are pretty much paying for the name.
If your reason for an Eclipse is for the appearance, the Talons can easily be converted to an Eclipse.

*EDIT*
1990-1994 Talons, Eclipses and Lasers are called 1g's (1st generation)
1995-1999 Talons and Eclipses are 2g's (2nd generation)

Re: buying an eclipse?

true, but the talons have a feature stock which i dont like that is the two color body. Thats the only difference which i dont like. Blackcrow is right, they are cheaper. There is one talon around my town that is white and purple with a phat talon decal on the hood which looks dope.
