Timing jumps

87 Camero, auto, 2.8 liter, 100,000.
My car has a surge at approximately 2200 RPM. I was checking the timing and had the car in base mode. With the timing light in place I increase the RPMs. At idle, the timing was right on the mark, 10 degrees. As the RPMs increase the timing decreased slightly and then at about 2200 RPMS the timing surged ahead to off the scale.
Is this normal and if not what could be the cause.
Thanks in advance for your help.
