93 Rear Window Channels

The rear window channels rusted out on my 4Runner. Got a new set from the dealer. The channels come with a rubber gasket that fits inside the metal channel. Do you put the rubber gasket on the window, then try to force the metal channel over it? Do you put the gasket first in the metal channel, then try to get that on the window? Do you soap it up or some other trick before putting it on? Any help would be appreciated!

I've done this to both of my Runners. I placed the rubber in the channel and used a rubber mallet to lightly tap the channel onto the glass. The soapy water dried too quickly for me and I had to take it off again to center it, which made it difficult. Try a light coat of WD40 on the glass, it made it go on fairly easy. So be sure to center it on the glass. Have fun.

I just discovered I have the same problem, need to get the rusted channels off first. What is the best way to make the swap? Take the door panels off, close the tail door, sit in the back and raise the rear glass until you have access? or some other way that may be mentioned in the manual that I do not have??????????????

You can push the latches on both sides of the tailgate closed or in the latched position, this allows you to use the key switch to roll the glass up (out) while the tailgate is laying down. I think it only has to be partially out to access the fasteners that mount the channel to the regulator.
