What!!?? Is This Thing???

ROFL! LMAO!....I had to pull the L/R inner cover off inside the car near the wheel well(93 sw)

Dum..dee dum..dee dee..a glance..then ok WHAT WAS THAT??..ALRIGHTY THEN...just WHAT IS THIS THING???

This is very definitely a factory part.It is attached to the inner rear fender behind the wheel. It is black plastic about 4" wide and 6" long and 2" thick.Looks like a miniature hood scoop. But the scoop end faces down and is sealed. It is also attached to some sort of bracket so that it is about an inch or so away from the fender. At the top of this thing I can reach down and feel on the inside of it some sort of filter.

There are no wires or hoses running to this thing.Doesn't look like there ever were?

I thought maybe a cabin air filter..not likely in an old Escort. And if it was.. this thing at a quick glance does not look like it comes off or apart.

Oh well..it has been there quietlly minding it's own business since the car was made and can stay right where it is HEHEHAHA

You've got my curiosity up. I have a '93 SW also. I'm not clear where it is. Are you talking about inside the car? Left rear? Under the plastic that covers the wheel well?

I have one too. Appears to be a vent. When air comes in through your heater or A/C it has to push some air out somewhere. Looks like this is the place.

I took another look..ya you're right it is some sort of vent thinggy..this thing sort of attaches to the inner fender RIGHT at the top of the large body side moulding at the bottom.Seeing as how it has a filter I am GUESSING that this is an air intake of sorts. Can't see them filterring air that they are exhausting..or LOL..maybe it had some sort of one way valve so that any air that does come in get's filterred.I don't think I will lose much sleep over this one..HAHA Thanks! for looking anyway!..

It's a one-way valve going out. The foam you feel is not a filter but is padding so you don't here the plastic door opening and closing. What an invention!
