Unhappy Brakes not braking well!!!

Okay, so i was driving to the mall like usual and i look over to see this girl on the edge of the street and i think nothing of it and right when i get close she runs out right in front of me. I pressed my brakes as hard as i could and my tires squealed and what not and i barely missed her by like 2 inches but after the incident my brakes felt very weird. I had to go almost all the way down to the floor to get any resistance in the brake pedal. I figured it might come back but its been like about 6 hours and nothing yet. What do you think happened to my brakes. O and p.s. i just got all new rotors and brake pads so there fine.

The piston rod inside the master cylinder is used to a certain amount of travel. Beyond these normal travel points, there may be (most likely be) a slight amount of corrosion. You pressed the pedal so hard that the piston traveled over the rough spot where the corrosion begins and has torn the master cylinder piston seal.

You'll need to replace the master cylinder to correct your problem.

This is a common problem that I've had to advise on for people who change their brake pads and then suddenly loose all pedal. Same thing happened here, when they went to pump the brakes back up after compressing the caliper pistons, they tore the master cylinder seal.

Put a block of wood behind your brake pedal while pumping them back up to avoid excessive brake (master cylinder piston) travel. The other technique that I use myself, is simply to press slightly, slowly and repeatedly, using short strokes, until the pedal comes back to normal.

Re: Brakes not braking well!!!

Dang man i thought it would come back to normal. How much do you think it was cost for me to replace it. I know a guy who basically will put something if if i buy it at a parts store and then charge maybe like 35 bucks labor. How hard is it to change the cylinder? Is it like hardcore mechanic stuff? I mean i still get a little pedal like i can stop fine every time its just its not a full pedal.

Re: Brakes not braking well!!!

I have a mechanic buddy who worked on my car and he found that my front brake line on the left side had to little holes in it which is supposedly way uncommon. I dont know but he went to the part store and custom bent a brake line bled the brakes and boom they werk perfect. I guess that master cylinder idea is gone...
