Airbag Light Reset Procedure?

Has anyone had experience resetting the SRS airbag light using the grounding procedure in the Camry manual (pg RS-65)? Does it work? What precautions are needed? I've read a couple threads where guys have had problems with it. I removed the airbag to change a headlight/parking light switch on the steering column IAW the manual. Now I've got the light. Toyota wants $112 to reset it. Help!

Re: Airbag Light Reset Procedure?

I copied this from another forum a while back (they're referring to the DLC1 - data link connector under the hood):

Use two short grounding wires, one at TC and one at AB, then

I approximated the time between grounding TC AND AB (roughly .5 to 1 sec) and
then held Tc to ground and the light flashed continously..I removed the ground
from TC and Voila' problem solved.I took me two tries....not too bad. Thanks Alot.

Re: Airbag Light Reset Procedure?

Hot dam! It worked the first time! Anytime I keep my money in my wallet is a great day! I already had the procedure from the "Camry Maintenance Manual" posted at the top of the website. The trouble was I read several other posts on this site and others about guys having trouble getting it to work. I found someone who said it does work in you Dan. If I could, I would buy you a beer. Thanks! For anyone else trying this make sure you use a good grounding point. That may be where others are having trouble. I wire brushed the engine removal hook near the DLC1 diagnosis connector and used it for my ground. Thanks again Dan and thanks to whoever loaded the manual on the site. My Haynes manual is in the garbage.

Hey AF'ers,

I have a 92 Camry V6 with Airbag light on. I tried the procedure listed in both this thread and the "94" manual. Is the process, or test procedure different in the "92"s? My light went on after troubleshooting a no start problem, I had removed the negative battery terminal for quite some time, and I had the ECU shutdown.

Thanks

Re: Airbag Light Reset Procedure?

Here's the official Toyota way of clearing the warning light for '92-'96 Camrys:

It is very similar to what Daniel posted with minor differences. The final grounding of tc is held for as long as necessary, and the interval is not more than 0.2 sec between terminals.

I will post this in the FAQ thread. Thanks Daniel.

Would anyone tell me exactly where the DLC's are located on my 93 four cylinder Camry? How big are they? What shape? Any label on them? I have the same problem but can't find the box. Thanks.

Re: Airbag Light Reset Procedure?

I don't believe you have any of the correct type. Your car is OBDI compliant. The DLCs in question are OBDII connectors.

Re: Airbag Light Reset Procedure?

The posts on this topic might be old but they are still praise-worthy! I had to pull the dash on my 95 Cam to repair the AC. After reassembly the SRS ligh stayed on constantly. This was the perfect fix! Thanks AF! I find it interesting that none of the manuals (Haynes) mention this little issue.

Re: Airbag Light Reset Procedure?

Although this thread is quite old, it's still very Valid. For other vehicle reset procedures here's a site that will explain everything you need to know about airbag lights and resetting the system. http://www.airbagsolutions.com/

This website gives you the procedure for diagnosing and resetting airbag lights. See if your car is listed here. Although it’s a pay site ($14.95/day), it’s a lot cheaper than going to the dealer
http://www.airbagsolutions.com/vehicles_list.aspx

On most vehicles, the airbag light should come on for @6 seconds, and then go off if the system is working properly. If there is a fault or a problem in the system, the light will remain illuminated, or flash continuously. If the airbag light does not work properly, some vehicles have an audible tone that sounds indicating a problem with the airbag light system. When the light is on (or the tone is sounding), the airbag will NOT deploy, even in an accident.
The flashing light on your car is telling the answer you need. On some vehicles, the light is flashing a two digit code. Once you know the code, you can most likely repair it yourself. There are fairly easy procedures that most people are capable of repairing.
Airbagsolutions.com has the fault code charts to tell you what is wrong and how to fix it!

Some vehicle manufacturers accommodate systems without a scanner (like Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, Infinity, Honda, Acura, Ford, Lincoln, Mazda & Mercury) and some require a scan tool.

Check out these websites also for more info on airbag systems and the light.

Lastly, check your vehicle for recalls through this link also:

Re: Airbag Light Reset Procedure?

This was very useful. It took me a while to get it, but it worked. The key is to ground the wires one after the other, just like it specifies..... Thanks for your help.....

Re: Airbag Light Reset Procedure?

I have a 92 Camry, it took lots of attemps, I finally did it, by grounding TC then AB alternately -like instructions say, I did it quickly like .2 seconds back and forth and then it worked. When I did it slower (about 1 second) = no luck. Hope it helps you!

Re: Airbag Light Reset Procedure?

It really helped with my 1993 camry. My car's airbag light goes off after starts. I grounded each of TC and AB in 0.2 seconds for five times. One second didn't work with my car.

Re: Airbag Light Reset Procedure?

I have a related problem: In our 1992 Camry we discharged the battery completely (we'd left the ignition on over night...) After jump-starting the car, the airbag light went on and will not shut off.

I've tried the reset procedure described above and also checked in the Toyota manual. I must have had 30+ trials with various time intervals etc and the light stays on. After doing a diagnosis I get error code 14 back.

Does anybody have any idea what to do from here besides going to a dealership?

Thanks in advance, Christof

Re: Airbag Light Reset Procedure?

FYI: Code 14 means and IGF signal is not getting from your ignitor to your ECM. This is either a bad connection in the wiring, bad wiring, or bad ignitor. I don't know what this has to do with your airbag light.

If you totally discharged your battery, it is time for a new one. Perhaps your battery or your alternator are bad as a result of your discharging/charging cycle. Have them tested. Bad alternators can create really strange symptoms on your dash lights.
