Unhappy Need help/advice with Windstar 2000 rear brake lights

A few days ago I've noticed the "check bulbs" indicator on the dashboard and indeed the rear brake lights (the bulbs on top of the fixtures) were not working. However the "high-mount" stop/brake light goes on fine when I brake. The bulbs & circuits to these bulbs semm fine, the same lights work fine on "hazard" and on "turn" but not when braking. I don't seem to have a "credible" electric diagram in the 2000 Windstar manual and I wondre what might cause the issue. It is worth noticing that these lights used to have an intermittent problem , they were coming on randomly (and the high-mount lamp still does) immediately or at random intervals after turning off the engine and locking the car. Any help appreciated.

I've had a 93 Taurus and now a 95 Windstar. I really don't like the quality of the sockets that Ford uses for their tail lights. They're good for a few years and then the little wire they use to connect the center contact gets a little worn and then gets hot. The plastic melts around it and the wire sinks down into the plastic and there isn't any more contact. I don't know why Ford would change the design of these sockets on the 2000.

Take the bulbs out and look at the bottom of the socket. I bet the plastic is melted a bit. Take a little hook and pull the wire up a bit (not too much). The bulb should light after you put it back in.

Then again, I may be totaly wrong.

Regards

Dan
