T/A hesitates when engine is cold
Hi, I have a 85 Trans Am v8 305. The car hesitated when it shifts and it turned out that the transmission was bad. So a rebuilt tranny was installed. Now it only hesitates when the car is cold (parked overnight). Once the car started and ran a little bit .. everything would be ok for the rest of the day.
Can somebody give me a hint what could be wrong? Any help is appreciated .. |

When I first step on gas, it doesn't respond right away .. and a second later it just goes. It doesn't have fuel injection ...

Sounds like a timing issue to me, but I'm no expert. That's why I'm on this forum. LOL. If it were my car, I'd check timing, distributer cap and rotor, plugs, and wires first. If you've done all that, then... ahhhh... someone else wanna chime in and help this guy? LOL
Good luck.

Re: T/A hesitates when engine is cold
is it a carb car? first off a carb car might do that when its cold. i know this cause mine does. after a while of driving when the car gets up to temp its fine. also if it is a carb car you just may need to play with the jets. if its not a carbed car and its fuel injected then its fuel related. may have a clogged fuel filter

dave is right. i have a 79 T/A and the car always runs bad for the first ten minutes that its running because of the lack of fuel injection. if u plan on driving this car during the bitter cold i would recommend that you star it and wait 8-10 minutes before driving it....just let it warm up at idle and it shold help the problem.

you might want to give more history to allow people to help you, how long have you owned the car, did it always do this? what mods have you done to the car, have you tried cleaning the carb? does the carb have electric choke? Is it an aftermarket carb? What do you plugs show (white, black, or redish brown). chances are everything is ok, its just your not used to a carburated car, keep in mind there's a reason why most new cars have fuel injection today, fuel injection is that much better for everyday drivers. A carburated car will always run a little weak when cold, its a fact of life, the reason you always hear of people messing with carbs is to keep this time of running bad as short as possible. things that can be done to help eliminate this problem, clean the carb, adjust the float level, make sure the fuel filter is clean, make sure the choke is adjusted up right, make sure the carb is tuned in just right, make sure you don't have any vacume leaks, check your timing, and on and on. |
