auto Transmition shifting problem

I have a 1995 Dodge avenger ES and the transmitions slips/slow shift between gears (all gears) It make the car shake. I had the transmition rebuilt about 1.5 years ago and it was fine untill now. I know the the transmition is an electronicly shifted transmition but other then that i have no idea what is wrong with it. Please Help ME!!!!

It has fluid. sometimes it will go into "limp" mode and if you restart the car it will be fine

I had a similar problem with a 1995 Avenger ES a few years ago. My personal mechanic said I had to replace the computer that controls the transmission. I took it to the dealer I purchased it from and fortunatly the transmission was under warranty at the time, and they just replaced the tranny. But I think my mechanic was on to something. Your problem may be computer related too.....

If you took the trans to a private shop (not the Dodge dealer) they may have put the wrong fluid in the trans, causing it to fail now. If you think that a shop would know what fluid to put in... you are wrong, my mother in law thought @@mco would know to put the correct fluid in when they rebuilt her trans, turns out they don't even carry the correct fluid in their inventory, so they put Dextron/Mercron in it. The trans failed 13 months later (1 month after the warranty ran out).

I'm sure it's the right fluid. It has been 1.5 years since the rebuild and the trany dose not leak a drop and was perfect up to 2 weeks ago. Now with the computer problem do you have any more info on that?

on older Dodge/Chrysler vehicles, as they age, the software inside of the transmission control module gets outdated and as a result, you get irregularities in shifting and the occasional and dreaded "limp mode." You can go to your local Dodge dealer and request for your TCM to be flash programmed. What that does is update the operating parameters of the TCM so that it can compensate for the mileage and age of the vehicle. As neon rt was saying, it is imperative that you use nothing but Mopar ATF+4 in ALL Dodge/Chrysler transmissions. If you don't, what happens is that the solenoid pack is very sensitive and can't flow other fluids properly. Mopar ATF+4 cost about $4 a quart at your local dealer, but it'll save you thousands in the long run. This is not a marketing scam by Chrysler, I use to work for one and I've seen many transmissions fail all b/c people don't use the right fluid.

There is one other cause for your problem. I've had this problem and a friend of mine had the same thing happen. I'll do all the technical name research later but there is a pump that forces the fluid into the transmission to force it to shift gears, that may be shot. That was the same problem I had and the same problem my friend had. Not to say that everyone else is wrong, I'm just adding another option for ya.

theFREAKnasty82, thats an interesting fact you mentioned about the automatic transmission fluid for chrysler automatic transmissions. Now that I think about it, I changed my transmission fluid about 6-8 months before my tranny failed. I purchased the fluid myself from PepBoys, so I'm sure it wasnt the Mopar ATF+4 you were refering to. I always thought the transmissions in the Avengers were just poorly built, cause I always heard other people with Avengers transmissions would fail also. But now I wonder if its not the transmissions, rather the type of fluid they put in their transmissions.,,,,

also to add on to what FREAK said.

Remember if your MOPAR vehicle uses ATF +3 tranny fluid you can switch to ATF+4 (synthetic version of +3) but you cannot go back to +3, you must continue to use the +4.

You do not have to use the atf 3 fluid.I have used ordinary ATF in Chrysler transmissions without any problems.All you have to do is put in an addative and I cannnot remember what brand it was.I like to find the moron who desighner who screwed up.Removal of the transmission is a pain in the *&^.I done one and it took 45 minutes to an hour to get it out.
