84 ford ranger

how do you find TDC on 2.8/2.9 v6 ford ranger i had to replace timing gear the o.e.m upper gear was combo of plastic and steel yikes aftermarkets are steel am i correct you puul #1 spark plug turn crank til you see piston and than line up gears and put them on ? any help would be appreciated

You could find tdc by not only looking but you would also have to put a srewdriver in there (be very careful) and turning the crankshaft back and forth a little and getting a good feel where tdc really is.But there should also be marks on the timing gears that you have to align.I have a chiltons book in front of me but they don't show picure of the marks.The 3.0and 4.0 both have dots on the gears that should be aligned.If your gears are marked(I imagine they are)you should not have to look for tdc with the piston.

thanks for info i will check into it i dunno why ford just didnt go with regualr steel gears on this its beyond me but oh well hey thanks alot julius
