Spark Plug Replacement

I have a 1997 Explorer 4.0 that has platinum plugs already installed. I am getting ready to replace them as they are worn, but I have never been a big fan of platinum plugs. My question is this, since thats what came in it from the factory should I continue to use them, or will the regular copper core plugs work as good or better. Can anyone recommend a good plug either way.

Re: Spark Plug Replacement

Stay with the oem motorcraft plugs.
Check the new motorcraft plug book there may have been some new or a no change on your plugs for it.
Anything else will lead to problems.

Re: Spark Plug Replacement

The plugs that were installed at the factory are single platinums so when you remove them (and they're the original set) don't be surprised when you notice there's 3 with one part number, while the other 3 have another! Because of the ignition system's design spark polarity "mirrors" in cylinder pairings so the single platinum plugs were installed in a arrangement so the platinum treated electrode would counter wear (guess they were too cheap to splurge on the platinum for the other electrode). You can use regular copper plugs, but they will burn up faster. I'de reccommend Motorcraft, or Autolite double platinum type plugs because of the longer lifespan and performance. Bosch platinums are the rage nowadays, but the center electrode's design tends to cause problems in loop style coil systems so don't try them unless you want misfire issues!
