|
stripped flywhel bolt
IN a bit on a jam! I need to remove the last bolt off my flywheel to replace it. However, ITS STRIPPED! Any hints? I'm trying to stay away from buying a new starter to match the existing flywheel (since I already have a nice powermaster) please help. Thanks.
- Nick p.s - Bill327, would your electric impact drill be of any use?

no just the head of the bolt. I tried everything I could think of: 6-point, 12-point, plyers, vice grips, wrenches, etc....

give this a try, put two bolts back in, one on each side of your bad bolt. That will help get some of the pressure off your bad bolt. get yourself a good set of vise grips that still have good teeth in the jaws. Instead of stongarming the vise grips use a hammer instead, its kinda like an impact gun. that happened to me once, i ruined the vise grips after an hour but i got the bolt out. IF you have access to a set of tourchs a little bit of heat wouldnt hurt either

I like the torch option, use a bernzomatic type propane torch, get the head of the bolt red hot, give it a rap with a hammer and try the vise grips. Wear eye protection!
I know that the bolts are recessed making things tough. If you can, try to hammer on a smaller impact type 6-point socket onto it. You can always drill a hole through the center and use an easy out. Let us know what works, good luck. Bob

Sometimes the heat will help to break the barrier of rust between the bolt and crank. In your case, you need all the help you can get. Your best bet is to try to dress the head up on the bolt with an air grinder and hammer an impact socket onto it. Try not to break it off in the crank though, those are hardened bolts and don't drill out that easy.

You could get a smaller socket and hammer it on. Use plenty of WD-40 or PB-Blaster to help loosen the bolt and use an impact gun on her. She should come out.

If you have access to a mig welder, you could try welding a nut to the end of the bolt. This should solve your stripped situation and hopefully the weld will hold and the bolt will come out.

I have an idea. Next time just don't strip the bolt and everything will be fine. lol I'm just kidding. Get back to us on if it came out or not.
