sounds like you are not getting the clip to to lock on to the tang of the lock. if that is the case, it may be that you need to pull the rod out slighly. the clip locks on the rod groove and the tang from the rod at the same time. try wiggling the rod in and out of the clip, as you push the clip on the lock tang.
