basic question about automatic gearbox

Im sorry for this stupid question, but I dont know exactly how it is. If I have car with automatic gearbox, I have P R N D 3 2 1 or for example P R N D S L. I dont know, what does letters L and S means and when it is ok to shift it. Thanks.

I think one is for towing and second for sport rides, but Im not sure.

Re: basic question about automatic gearbox

L = Low
S = Second
D = Drive

In a normally functioning trans, having it in Drive will allow it to go from 1st-2nd-3rd (and if overdrive) 4th.

-edit- You should only use it in L or S when you're driving very slowly, or downhill and need to use your engine rather than the brakes to maintain a slower speed.

Read your owner's manual, there should be a good bit of information in there (that would take me forever to type!)
