Hello whatdofisheat,
does the car still have the owners manual? if so see what it says about how to place and remove the car in 4wd.
I owned a 1983 NISSAN 4wd pickup and to get it completely out of 4wd I had to put it in reverse and back up a few feet. that way the hubs would disengage. you might want to try that with your car.
another option is to call the a toyota dealer and ask them if their is some trick to get car out of 4wd.
