Turbo SOHC!
Hey, I have a 91' SOHC, I heard that they got 8.9 compression ratio and that the motors will be able to handle a decent amount of boost without too many mods...
I have in the works to put a turbo on it, the parts I figure are necessary are below: turbo manifold & exit flange, turbo intake piping, oil cooler TT oil housing boost controller boost gauge A/F gauge fmu (fpr) oil feed and return lines I/C and lines What else will be necessary, and is this a good idea or should I scrap it... BTW- I'm just looking a small-medium single-turbo to up my hp and gas mileage...

Re: Turbo SOHC!
sry, I also forgot, it'd be a good idea for an EGT gauge, right?

Re: Turbo SOHC!
you do know that rippmods.com already makes a pretty nice supercharging kit for the SOHCs right??? Just a thought...
if you really want performance I'd highly suggest just keeping your SOHC as a daily driver and finding a 3/s with a DOHC engine, and than going from there

Re: Turbo SOHC!
well, true that... but I'm limited on cash, was trying to learn a few things and piece my own together... but yeah, I had already considered rippmods

Re: Turbo SOHC!
also, with DOHC you're looking at 10.0 compression, I heard you'd have to build the engine before turboing, especially if you're wanting to boost highrer than say 12 psi

Re: Turbo SOHC!
how a/b if I kept the bottom end, and changed the heads over to the DOHC... would that be a bad idea?

Re: Turbo SOHC!
dohc heads will not bolt to a sohc engine.
you can run tons of boost on a 10:1 engine, its all in the tune and using the right fuel. by tons I mean 30+. the same is probably true of sohc engines

Re: Turbo SOHC!
sry I heard the DOHC was a bolt-on deal with the SOHC... b/c they are the same block... I heard it was alot less safe to run alot on higher stock compression... I guess that was these people scoffing at my buddy running 10.9:1 on his civic, and then turboing... btw his car was extremely fast (eating 350z's)

In my mind adding too much power to a front wheele drive is pretty pointless...specially our cars.
1. WAY to heavy. 2. FWD plane out sucks. 3. Way to expensive to Fix if it messes up. The thing is that there isnt much future. I mean...i LOVE my car. But i know u cant get very far performace wise on a SOHC FWD. This is just my opinion. |

Re: Turbo SOHC!
I dont see 3100 lbs as heavy, but thats just me. Lower compression and FI is safer, but so what.

Re: Re: Turbo SOHC!
Spawn on 3si has a 98 SOHC 3000gt. With RIPPMODS SDS, their headers and some other mods he put down 256hp the the wheels. This is on a ATX too. A MTX is looking at ~270 with the same setup. There is plenty of potential in the SOHCs as well as about any motor if you do it right.

Re: Turbo SOHC!
Its FWD...potential for me is getting alot. It will take Some serious money to get ur car running 11's like some people do....
Maybe your not trying to run 11's or even 12's but i mean...what about handling?? It will be like a honda civic with balls. But handel like crap. |

Re: Turbo SOHC!
well, I like the way mine handles, and at 3100 lbs (3076, I think) and a couple of mods, especially rear strut tower bar, and a front sway bar (upgrade)... the car's should handle fine... especially to be running less than 300hp... I am also working with limited funds, so that's why I wish to build the SOHC and do most of it myself.... with the mods I already have, and obtaining parts from some of my sources, as well as the one's listed above... I could have a decent turbo setup on my car for about $600...

Re: Re: Turbo SOHC!
The main thing that hurts the SOHC in handling is lack of a rear sway bar. With just ground control coilovers Deathsled on 3si says his SOHC outhandles his VR4. Handling is a non issue.
