transmission bad or just torque converter?
Hey everybody,
I need some help here. I have a '99 G. Caravan 3.8 AWD. 235K. Car came to a clunking stop as slowing down on an offramp after being on the highway. Never had tranny problems. Towed to dealer--they started it up and as soon as it was put in drive, it would die, unless they revved up the engine. They said it needed a new tranny. So I towed it home and started it up the other day just for kicks. It drove like new for 10 minutes or so until it was warmed up. Then, as I was coming to a stop, it clunked, which shook the whole van and then it stalled out. I started it and tried to put it in drive and it clunked again and stalled out. Does this sound like a tranmission gone bad? Torque converter? Torque converter solenoid? Any suggestions are welcome--this van is just sitting in front of my house. Thanks. |

Re: transmission bad or just torque converter?
yeah, your problems definetly sounds transmission related. With the miles you have on your van, it's a possibility that the torque converter has decided to act up. I'd chalk that up as a very positive thing that at 235,000 miles, you need a rebuild.

Re: transmission bad or just torque converter?
Sounds like the Torque Converter Clutch is not dis-engaging when it is supposed to. Could be bad torque converter or bad electrical.

Hey, thanks for the replies. If it is the torque converter, how can I tell if it is the electrical component or the torque converter itself?
