Timing Belt

While I am in the middle of replacing the water pump on my 2000 2.0 Liter Jetta I have decided to replace the timing belt, timing belt tensioner, and drive belt because there is 70K on it and this has never been done.

The only thing that worries me is getting the number one piston at the correct position and the timing correct. Just by looking at my repair manual I have lined up the marks on the crankshaft/lower belt cover as well as the marks up top on a sprocket. I had a bit of compression in the number one spark plug hole so as far as I can tell it is right on.

Just a couple of questions:

Is ther anything else i need to do before I remove the belt?

How do I know if the timing is off?

Can the timing be fixed if the timing is off when I am done, How?

SPin the engine by hand 2 revolutions (crankshaft) & see if the marks line up, if not take the belt loose, move one sprocket & try again. Don't forget the distributor marks.

My repair manual does not have any info on the distributor or the marks I need to look at. Any way you can tell me where to look without a picture?

My bad, 2000 2.0

The marks I know of are the crank shaft pully (v shaped mark) and lower belt cover mark (just a notch) also the camshaft sprocket ( small indented line on the sprocket) and the rear upper timing belt cover (O.T. and an arrow)

HELP!!!!

I just did a more extensive road test and I found that I have a lot less power on the road. Also there is a loud rattle coming from my engine. Also the check engine light is not only on but it is flashing also.

PLEASE, can someone tell me how I can perform a base timing procedure on my jetta? it is a 2.0 2000. My book has no info on timing at all, just tells me to get it at TDC when I change the belt.

HELP!!!, PLEASE!!! I have no car and I need it to work as soon as possible.

Also, while I am asking what sprocket do i use to do the adjustment for the base timing procedure with the belt? The camshaft or crankshaft? I am guessing the crankshaft.
