This is a new one Please help

I have a 94 Astro van. It ran very well except the gas mileage sucked, about 5 mpg and the exhaust smelled WAY TOO RICH! It also idled rough.A month ago my alternator went out,I hope. I live in Japan and it (the alternator)finally got here today. While I was waiting I took out the EGR? valve and cleaned it with Berrymans cleaner. It wasn't too dirty to begin with but since I took it out I decided to clean it. I also changed the rotor and cap,(completely destroyed). I installed everything and now it runs like a raped banshee. It shoots to about 9000 rpm's immediately. I have to shut it off. It's like the throttle body or cable is kinked or something though it doesn't appear to be.
does anyvbody have any ideas,
Please help me, I need my cruiser back.
Thanks.

Re: This is a new one Please help

is it TBI or CPI?
First thought I had is the butterfly valve is sticking open.
Second thought is the fuel pressure regulator is stuck open.
Third thought was the idle air control valve is malfunctioning ( but I think this would throw a code and the check engine light would be on)

Certainly start with the basics, pop the air filter housing off the intake and make sure the throttle linkage is working correctly and the butterfly valve are closing correctly.

From what you've described, way too much fuel is being fed to the engine at idle.

I'd guess you have the EGR valve on wrong, or the gasket is bad, letting excess air into the intake. A giant vacuum leak will cause this and the ECM just gives it more fuel so it will run at that high rpm.

Re: This is a new one Please help

Kings, Thanks. I believe it is CPI.It is a W series Vin #.butterfly valve is OK.fuel pressure regulator, don't know yet.I don't even know where that is yet.Linkage seems OK too. I'm trying Tom3's suggestion and have removed the EGR valve again.
On wrong,? don't think so as I'm sure when I removed it the first time the electric clip was pointingright. Gasket? It looks good and replacing it could take weeks so I am putting gasket sealer on to make sure. My problem now is that I can't get it back on with my big hands. Plus it started raining. Not my day.LOL. Tommorrow I'm afraid I'll have to remove the alternator again to put it back on.I hope it is just a leaky gasket!

Re: This is a new one Please help

Turns out that the gasket wasn't sealing. The right bolt was'nt tightening down all the way. Plus I think it might have had something kinked in the linkage.
Thanks

You can also check your intake gasket and manifold(s) for cracks/leaks. This will cause an excess amount of air into the mix and a super-high idle!
