Squeaking from wheels, Help!

It has been bothering me lately, because I hate the squeaking noise. Sounds like the brake pads, but I have checked them and they are pretty much brand new, all the way around. When I'm driving, mostly 55mph and under is the only time I can hear it, but that may be because the wind noise at higher speeds drown it out, it squeaks. It does it when I'm NOT pressing the brakes though. When I press the brakes it seems to stop or cut out a little bit. Also when I turn the wheel sharp on the road at pretty much any speed it stops squeaking, but when the pressure is released and the wheel is back straight it will sometimes start back. I can't tell for sure where it's coming from but I think its from the front on both sides. I have been in a little sand, little mud, little water. Do you think it could be the wheel bearings? Someone told me to check this along with the rotors possibly being warped. But it doesn't really vibrate while braking so I wouldn't think it would be the rotors. I hate to replace the wheel bearings, is there a possibility of just greasing them in some way, what would be required get to the area to grease, and what type of grease to use? Thanks in advance!

Stephen

Re: Squeaking from wheels, Help!

Jack the truck up and spin each wheel. Put some blocks around the front tires and lift the back axle completely off the ground. Find which corner you are getting the noise from first.

Everything you are describing sounds like a brake pad. Each pad, inside and outside has a "Squeeler."

Yea, I checked every single pad when I rotated my tires. Each pad front and rear, on both sides of the rotor had plenty of pad left, looked brand new.

Re: Squeaking from wheels, Help!

I get some kind of a squak when I turn at low speeds. I thought it was the PS pump, but it does not come from under the hood... I dunno what mine is.

Re: Squeaking from wheels, Help!

Just cause there is plenty of pad left does not mean that it is not the cause of the noise. Are they newer pads that you put on yourself ? A good trick to try is to grind a bevel in the leading and trailing edge of the brake pads, on all of them. Sometimes a lower quality pad will squeal. I purchased a set of pads for the 96 i used to own and not cheap ones either , they were about $45 and that thing sounded like a damn bus. I tried the beveling trick but it did not work nor did having the rotors turned. Ended up buying $90 pads to shut it up lol.

Re: Squeaking from wheels, Help!

get some "no squeak stuff" they'll know what you're talking about at the auto parts. I installed new pads on my wife's car, and it squeaked from day one... put some of that stuff on it, and stopped it in its tracks

Re: Squeaking from wheels, Help!

Nice to know about the lots of pad left, how far back is the "Squeeler?" Sometimes the warning device is not at the same distance.

Good Luck

Re: Squeaking from wheels, Help!

I also tried some of that no squeak suff and it did not help either. I tried everything possible to stop them from squealing, it was just a matter of poor quality pads. That may not be the issue here though, try the stop squeal stuff , maybe have the rotors machined. I doubt that it is the bearings, i have never heard of a wheel bearing squealing on a vehicle, and i have seen some pretty nasty wheel bearings some of which did not make any noise either till it was too last(at least noise that could not be heard). I am almost certain that his problem is caused by the pads being a little too loose in the calipers and when there is no pressure applied to them they will "chatter", this chatter will happen so fast it sounds like a squeal. Any little amount of pressure on the pads such as turning will stop this chatter from happening. Some better quality pads come with little shims you can stick onto the backing of the pads or it is already on there to make the pads fit tighter into the calpiers so they won't chatter.

Just fixed this - it was the clips that hold the pads. Pull the pads and the clips, I'll betcha you will be able to see a corner that is ground clean on the clip. Took more time to get the truck off the gorund then it did to fix the noise.
Good Luck...

So, what did you do to fix this?

Re: Squeaking from wheels, Help!

I wonder if by clips he meant the squealer springs ? If so , simply removing them does the trick, but you have to keep a close eye in them after that cause you no longer have anything telling you that it is getting close to time to change the pads. I know some people frown on this practice but imo there is alot of pad left once the squealer starts making noise.
