A baseball question...
So, I've been watching a few of the playoffs games, and I've noticed that several of the player's helmets appear to be burnt on the front. I'm curious as to the reasons for this, any ideas?

Its pine tar. Better grip on the bat. Extremely sticky and can be a pain in the ass.

so, why is it on the helmets? I've never seen helmets like this before, but what purpose would it serve on someones helmet?

Its on the helmet so when a player is at the plate and needs more tar, they can just reach up and get some from their helmet.

Well from the sounds of it you don't watch a lot of baseball(just an assumption) Some players like it a lot, some don't at all. Also, sometimes it isn't pine tar, sometimes it is just bubbled paint after re-painting so many times. with the pine tar, it really all depends on the player. Peace-

I know who he's talkin about, it was definately pine tar...when i played i loved the stuff, course...i can't play now..bum arm and all... :sad:

People have been doing the pine tar thing for a while. I remeber Jim Thome doing that with the Indians since around 1997.

Craig Biggio has done it his entire career. He USED to be the guy known with the messiest helmet. His has actually cleaned up quite a bit in the past few years, although it's still there.
I'm just assuming you haven't noticed it much because most likely you haven't always been a fan of baseball or just not paid that much attention and are now more of a fan. Not really sure

Well, I'm not a really big baseball fan, but I've always watched plenty of games, and somehow, it wasn't until this season that I've ever noticed it. Strange.

It depends on the player and sometimes the team. Bobby Cox won't let Braves players do this. Then you see player on the BoSox or Vladimir Guerrero, and their helmets are kind of gross.

Im not a fan of the pine tar. I play amature ball so we use wooden bats and ive never had a problem with the grip. To each their own though.

A lot of the time the players use pine tar which they may rub with their hand or grab the bat in spots that has pine tar - then they'll grab their helmet and adjust it while they are wearing it around the bases (or at the plate). That stuff sticks to anything and leaves a smear behind.
It doesn't seem any more prevelent this year then in any other.
