Tranny problem?

Step Brother has a 97 Grand Cherokee with a 3 speed Auto tranny. Found bad front seal and low fluid which was causing slip. Told him to take to his mechanic have him replace seal.

I drove vehicle with correct fulid. No slip starts out no problem. Up shift at 15 mph. Then shifts at about 35 mph. Reverse no problem

His mechanic is trying to tell him there is no low gear. No where I come from Reverse and first is controoled by the 1st band. If low gear is gone. Engine should high rev the slam hard into 2nd when pulling out.

His vehicle doesn't do this. I think his mechanic is blowing smoke up his tail pipe!

Any ASA or tranny pro's have an opinion? Please email me so I may print them and show him.

You said that reverse works fine. That shows that the front clutch and rear band are ok.

Is there a difference in actual operation between starting out in "D" and starting out with the shifter in "1"

The rear band only operates when the shifter is in "1" and in "R" .


When in "D" or "2" the overrunning clutch holds the rear drum and you have no engine braking in first as the drum freewheels when coasting.

SO - if first gear operates correctly in the "1" position, the rear clutch and rear band are OK.

Now try starting out in "D". IF there is a problem now when it operated correctly in "1" position, it will be the overrunning clutch or a valve problem in the control of the rear clutch (least likely IMHO).

If it starts out fine in "D" and in "1" shifter positions I would let it go with a fluid and filter change.

My shift problems have dissappeared since I changed out the ATF+3 for ATF+4 using the genuine mopar fluid and retrained the transmission control module. Hopefully it stays that way with cold weather coming on again.

Thanks I'll try that next time I am up to see him. Interesting what you said about free wheeling. After I corrected fluid level. Step bro complained that the jeep didn't coast freely like it used. My father and I both told him that's a good thing. That's how the tranny is supposed to work.

Brother called said his mechanic said it was the pressure selinoid switch and govenor selinoid was bad and tranny was starting out in 3rd gear. When I asked him if he put in low manually did it pull out without any problems. He said yes no problems.

Something doesn't sound right here to me.

Any comments?
