Unhappy Sluggish Shifting Gears-99 Passat Automatic

Why does my 99 Passat (automatic) hesitate when shifting from 1st gear to 2nd? Also, my check engine light is on and had it checked by my mechanic and no errors are coming up? Any ideas why the light is on? My O2 sensors are good. I have never used octane higher than 87. Is this a cause of problem? Thanks, Dan

it even says in the owners manual to use only 91octane or better.

If there is a code in the transmission control module it will sometimes set the code "check tcm memory" in the engine control module. Most common problems are a wet floor on the passenger side where the TCM is located. I would pull up the carpet and check the wires for corrosion.
