Subwoofer in Cavi

Hi. It's my first time here so sorry if I'm not posting this in the right spot. I have a 12" Type R sub in my car, and yesterday this little black rubber piece that kind of holds the sub flapped up, making it sound like crap. Here is what I am talking about:

See where the arrow is? That's what's flapping up about 1/4 of the way around the sub. Can I glue this back down? And if so, what kind of glue and where do I get it?? Thanks for your help!!

your sub is blown, you must be overpowering it. your sub is fukt you could try glueing it but it's still going to sound like someone gargling with broken glass!

The speaker itself sounds fine--it's just the air coming through that gap making it sound bad. I know what a blown sub sounds like and it's not blown....plus, I've had a lot more power going to this sub before (hello-it's a Type R Competition 12") and it's done fine. Right now I think I only have 700W going to it.

rms or peak? if that's come off then take it back under warranty. it's also not how many watts are going to it but the quality of the signal, the frequencies the sub is reciveing. it could be a manufacturing fault. your call!

just glue it down then if you think its fine...crazy glue will do it..but chances are...ANY glue you use is just going to be ripped apart cuz its still a 12' thats being pounded...you can glue it but it'll last like maybe a month before its torn again..better of taking it back under warrenty or just buying a new one

I read that silicone glue would work...that crazy glue is the worst thing you could use (is silicone glue more flexible or something??)...a freidn loaned me the sub...he bought it like 2 years ago so I doubt he still has the receipt...and it weird cuz he had a lot of power going to it (actually, he had two of these subs with two high powered amps...) I'll try calling Pioneer and see what they say.

silicon is flexible and ductile but yeah crazy glue isn't. the rubber piece is what suspends the sub though so nothing will last

Well, it only seperated about a 1/4 of a way around the sub, so I caught it early I guess. I searched for similar posts here and it seems like this is a common problem with Type R's. All recommendations point to silicone glue (and I can get it for $2.99 at Home Depot). I called two local audio sounds places, and they recommended silicone glue as well. Unfortunately, Alpine's warranty is only 1 year (mine's about 2 y.o.) and the guy on the phone at Alpine said someone else with the same problem used silicone and it worked fine! So, silicone it is!! hehe

Oh yeah and crazy glue+rubber is very bad. It will turn the rubber to a hard white chunk that you could probably crack off. BAD!

Thats a good sub too, I just picked up a pair of Type R 12s for 125 bucks.

You might look to see if there are any speaker repair shops in your area. I know there are a few in my town. They are mostly small shops and small shops often don't mind handing out free advice if it might bring in a customer down the road.

I have the Type S subs, and the first set I had the cone seperated from the voice coil. They were under warranty and so I got brand new ones for no charge. The second time my subs went bad was when the gluing came undone and the subwoofer seperated from the base (if that makes sense). I was told that Alpine at that time was having problems with the gluing issue and lots have been returned.

I have pretty much a brand new set that hasn't been listened to that much that I am going to get rid if so I can pay off a credit card.

yea..i guess crazy glue wouldnt be that great of an idea..what am i thinking..,my point is that yea you can get the silicon stuff..but the sub is still going to rip the glue apart in no time..nothing thats been broken will ever be as good as when it was brand new 100 percent...and yea..alpines are nice subs but theyre design lacks..every person ive ever seen that owns that sub has had cracks...thats why i went with rockford
