Fast Idle on '01 SE 2.4

After starting my car, I noticed the idle was running quite a bit higher than normal, 2000rpm at start, and then it lowered and steadied around 1700RPM. I've searched through old threads and saw that the idle air controller could be the problem, and one post from several years ago mentioned a MAF. However, the car has not had any other serious problems. Until today, the car has idled aroudn 700-800RPM, but now the idle stays around 1700 and creates a rather noticable difference in sound and definitely effects the driving experience. The grand am is a 2001 SE 2.4L with a 5spd. I would appreciate any help, and thank you in advance.

The first thing I would do is to check for a vacuum leak on the engine. A vacuum leak will cause high idle and it would stand to reason that if the car was fine one day and not the next that a line has either broken or come off.

The IAC and MAF sensor can cause this type issue as you stated. You can easily clean both with some throttle cleaner for the IAC and some electronics cleaner for the MAF.
