Thinking of going from Honda to Audi... help me out.

Just a general question.... how happy are all of you with your a4's? compared to other vehicles youve owned, how does the a4 compare? ive been seriously looking at them lately and dont know exactly what i want. does the 2.8 have a considerable amount of tourque over the 1.8t? what about hp? are there any common problems with them? any certain years/models to stay away from? my current car is an 89 civic hatchback and ive been very pleased with it and all but its getting way too old and breaks down more and more often. please let me know what you think and what your personal opinions are, it would be greatly appreciated. thanks a lot.

Adam,
welcome to where the men are.
trust me, the only thing you'll miss is the gas mileage.
your honda is probably getting you about 31/32mpg?
either audi powerplant will only see that on highway, with cruise.
other than that, it is wonderful to have ALL the features of a luxury car, the sport tuned suspension, amped stereo-stock, auto everything.
a door slam that sounds like the solidness you expect from an older American boat, yet it still has the nuance of an air tight seal of a Saab or aircraft.
as far as down side, timing belt, just like a honda, an interference engine, but newer Gates high mileage belts can be put in, and ignored for 70-90+K.
(was DIE HARD GM until met current girlfriend, she had a VW; then did my research: German= safest, strongest, fastest)
2.8L 172HP/172TQ (depending on miles and maint.)
any other questions, PM me, or post it.

hope this helps,
chris

Re: Thinking of going from Honda to Audi... help me out.

If you are looking for a Audi and do not want to mod it to get power, I would get a S4. I have (2) Audi S4s and am loving both of them.

250 hp stock, quattro, what more can you ask for. I was a Honda/Acura guy until I got an Audi A4 V6 20V quattro. Fell in love with the handling and luxury feel of the Audi but did not have enough power for me, so I got the S4s.

Once you upgraded to an Audi from a Honda/Acura, you'll never want to go back..

i just wrote a long reply and the computer froze so let me try to remember what i typed...

ok, i only have about $10,000 to spend on a car, so an s4 is out of the question. theres this a4 i found locally, i think it seems to be a pretty good deal, its right here if you want to let me know what you think.
Im really getting sick of the whole honda scene. i love my car, but its getting too old. i know this sounds like a "ricer" type question, but im gonna ask anyways. my car runs a 14.9 in the 1/4. if anyone knows, what does a stock 2.8 run? im not gonna take my audi to the track, but i would like to know how fast an a4 is compared to my car.
I will get into modding things, but im not gonna go crazy because im still in school and when i graduate in may, im moving accross the country to arizona with my girlfriend and starting to settle down. things ill do first are replacement parts like the timing belt, water pump, fuel filter, brakes, etc. as far as mods though, i would like to get a set of lowering springs like h&r and a quiet, tasteful exhaust.
I do have a few more questions for you though...
-im a mechanic, in your opinion how are a4's to work on. like doing the t-belt, misc stuff like that. is there much room in the engine bay to move your hands around?
-what does the 2.8 get as far as gas mileage?
-how much does an a4 weight?
-(this one may be stupid) how do you get rid of the emblem on the front grille? does it just come off or do you need to get a replacement grille? a4's without that front emblem look so clean.

alright, i think that was most of what i wanted to say. thank you again for all your help!

Re: Thinking of going from Honda to Audi... help me out.

If your are going to get an A4 with the V6 engine, I would stay away from the 96-97 models because it is the 12v engine only. The newer model A4 V6 has the 30v engine which makes a little bit more power.

If you are planning on moding the car, there are more options for the 1.8t then for the V6.

If you are new to Audi's, take a look at www.audiworld.com. A lot of good stuff there.

Re: Thinking of going from Honda to Audi... help me out.

Also A4's that are older then the 00 models are notorious for bad CV boots and Mass Air Flow sensers going bad. The V6 model is a pain to replace the timing belt yourself (where you have to take off the front end). There are a lot of good how to's articles on audiworld. Hope this helps.

Re: Thinking of going from Honda to Audi... help me out.

I actually got it done b/c someone was willing to do it for $150 and that was worth it for me not to have to do it... its doable...but its different than most suspensions..
