2.5L-F/I fuel and spark issues - any make/model.. we gotta figure it out

Ive read no matter what make or model of car that has the 2.5 iron duke with fuel injection.. all the platforms have had issues. Seems to be an ongoing thing here, so there has to be an answer.
Maybe my case is different but i doubt it.

Ive experienced
-backfiring out the intake (yes, from just smoke to large fireballs), you should see what it does to a filter and cap!
-missing or cutting out/backfire while driving (cut out for a fraction of a second or more) very fowl smelling backfire through intake
-dying while parked or driving (like someone shuts the key off)
-finally it ends with the car starting very rough (firing on intake stroke or too soon on compression stroke) or no start at at all
-intermittent fuel and spark operation (when together it backfires almost always).

Ok, now i tell you what i have done.. I have gone though 4 ecms, 4 ignition coils, 3 sets of plugs/wires, 7-8 ignition modules and crank sensors, and 3 map sensors. Weather or not they were all bad i cannot tell you. almost every time i replace the crank sensor and ignition module it fixes the problem for a short time, then it starts all over again after a few hundred miles. All i can say is THANK GOD FOR LIFETIME WARRANTY! im sure the plug wires and plugs were ok, i was just covering everything it possibly could be. Just today about 5 hours ago i had it running in the driveway.. ran beautiful at idle, but the past 2 days that i drove it it has backfired while driving a few times. Took a shower, came back out to leave and crank crank crank.. nothing. then fireballs and sputters started. WTF!!! In the past i have got out of a jam by unhooking the battery and turning the key on to drain any power so it will reset the electronics.. it has worked but didnt last. The ecm quad drivers as they are called i have been told will shut down if there is a potentially harmful problem... still doesnt explain the igniton and fuel being out of time.

Like everybody else, i have good fuel pressure and i have replaced the filter. injector had been cleaned and tested. I believe hell began one day when i had an alternator short and charge 18 volts at idle to the system. Blew a hole in a coil.. replaced the coil then a few hundred miles later the ignition module went out, then after that the ecm and prom pack fried. since been replaced of course with new and reman.

replacing the electronics is not a cure anymore... has anyone heard of a solution to this?.. besides sell the car

i have an unofficial solution to this problem.. lets just take all pieces of shit with the 2.5 tbi engine and burn them to the f-ing ground. spent a whole week on it.. new ecm, ignition module, plugs, wires, and crank sensor. all this week they are new.. checked all the wires in the harness both ways, checked for power, and waveforms.. the car is just fucked.

Thanks, I think you helped me...

I think your message has inspired me...to give up on troubleshooting my own '91 cutlass ciera's problem. I think I'm now ready to sell her to the junkyard for $60. Sounds like a related issue.

Re: 2.5L-F/I fuel and spark issues - any make/model.. we gotta figure it out

My dad has an 89 with the 2.5, 177K, in the last year and ahalf we have replaced the igniton module, crank sensor, oil pressure sender, head, all gaskets, plus plugs wires etc. and more so I have worked on it quite a bit. Let's face it, it;s an old car. It does run fine though, maybe better than before, but let me add a couple of suggestions. Check the throttle body, his was in bad need of a rebuild when we replaced the head. The car that has no power...this might be your problem but also you might have a blown head gasket or perhaps a cracked head. Maybe the ecm is bad. Not sure what else it could be. Sounds like the first poster has a BAD problem, but maybe still worth checking this out. The TB is easy to rebuild, and the one with no power too. Might check compression too or look for signs such as milky oil, brown anti freeze, swelling hoses... not sure what else to add. My dad's had the ignition module fail originally, and we replaced the crank sensor given the age of it. then later the head gasket blew, putting pressure on the cooling system. Found head was cracked too. That's when we rebuilt the TB, and replaced all other parts such as O2 sensor, plugs, wires, etc. The point is, his runs well and they are still good engines. Worth trying to repair I think.
