Crankshaft Pulley Holding Tool

Hi,
I am planning to replace the timing belt on my 92 Accord (195k miles, still the original TB). The manual says that I need a special tool to hold the pulley and use another socket to break loose the center bolt.

The dealer has the tool but it's pretty expensive. I would like to know what kind of tool you guys use for this task and where do you buy it? Thanks.

Re: Crankshaft Pulley Holding Tool

I have a crank pulley holder but never use it. I use a 3/4" impact gun for crank bolt removal. Those bolts can be hard as hell to remove with hand tools. Some parts stores may be able to rent you a pulley holder.

It can be quite difficult to get the crankshaft pully bolt off cause it's torqued to about 160 lbs. I usually use a chain wrench around the pully and let it brace against the car frame or suspension. but it can bite into the edge of the pully. I recently changed my 90 accord belts and had to make a pully holder that grabbed the two holes in the outer pully. It was just a flat bar with a socket sized hole centered between two little holes that lined up with the holes on the pully. I used pins through the bar and the pully...and braced the bar against the ground. After twisting off a 1/2 inch extension and braking a craftsman socket, I finally got the darn thing loose.
