Re: getting click when starting

does it crank at all?

check your spark plugs are in all the way and the wires are firmly on the spark plug. you'll feel a click from the wire when you push it in all the way

Yes it does turn over...or at least it did. Put the cables on the battery w/o tightening. it turned over and started though the battery acted kind of sluggish. tightened the cables down and tried to start it but all i got was a few clicks. power on in the car but not turning over at all. today rolled the van forward over the sidewalk to lift it and just out of the blue tried to turn it on. It started but still battery acted sluggish. had to keep foot on the gas to keep it going. stalled as soon as I took my foot off. I"m thinking it's something with the battery cables. Any ideas?

Re: getting click when starting

It is normal operation that the engine will stall after the battery cables have been disconnected/reconnected. The computer loses it's memory regarding mixture and idle settings. If your battery is low, it could cause other problems. Normally the first start after a reconnect, the engine will start, rev to 1500-2000 rpms and then die. Without turning the key off, restart, it may go through the 1500-2000 rev sequence again and then idle too slow or sputter and quit. Try again, don't turn off the key, this time it should start and stay started. If you battery is too low, the memory will be lost every time you engage the starter and it will never learn how to set the idle. You will find that the transmission (4-speed auto only) may not shift smoothly for a time while the computer relearns the proper shift parameters.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not sure that that has anything to do with my problem because once it stalls, you can't turn it over again. just get the one or two clicks and sometimes nothing at all. thanks

Sounds like a battery or battery cable problem. Remove cables again and clean again. Be sure your ground conections are clean and tight from your battery to the chassis also. Reconnect and try again.

had the battery hooked up to charger while still in car. It read 4 on the meter.(it's a schumaker charger) Tried to start the van got nothing but click, But now it reads 8 on the charger. Could this mean that it's my battery?
